No Drunk Driving Deaths at 2014 San Antonio Fiesta

The city of San Antonio, Texas is reporting that there were no drunk driving related deaths at their annual Fiesta spring festival for the fourth year in a row. Street festivals at which alcohol is served are unfortunately notorious for resulting in drunk driving or accidents stemming from alcohol.

Over the past few years, San Antonio has started to crack down on security at Fiesta to curb incidents of driving while intoxicated. One positive development has been the establishment of safe transportation alternatives for people who have been drinking. The Fiesta Safe Rides program provides festival goers with free cab ride vouchers through Yellow Cab. The Fiesta San Antonio Commission also encouraged festival attendees to designate a driver for the day or take advantage of the VIA Park and Ride shuttle bus service that runs for special events.

San Antonio law enforcement has been working to increase and improve alcohol education to residents, and the San Antonio Police Department reports that the number of driving while intoxicated (DWI) arrests at Fiesta has decreased in recent years.

In 2011, Bexar County expanded its “No Refusal” policy from just weekends to being applicable every day of the year. This policy dictates that suspected drunken drivers who refuse a breath test are now subject to a mandatory blood draw. While some residents have applauded the policy expansion, it’s been met with harsh criticism from others who believe this measure goes too far and essentially forces people to incriminate themselves to avoid having a blood sample taken. No matter where residents stand on the issue, it’s important to be aware of before getting behind the wheel.

If you find yourself or someone in your family charged with driving while intoxicated, it is best to consult with an experienced DWI lawyer who can hear your case and help you fight the charges.
